FIFTH ORDER: Alexandria Music Residency
To close my four-month music residency with the City of Alexandria, I'll be giving two last performances of  Fifth Order, a new site-specific duo piece commissioned by Alexandria's Office of the Arts, and premeired there this summer. The music of this 25-minute score interacts with the Mirror, Mirror installation at Alexandria's new  Waterfront Park — which responds with lighting changes as the music is performed. During the course of a four-month residency, three extraordinary (and very different) performers join me to perform the piece: Tillery (vocals and trumpet) , Sarah Marie Hughes (alto sax), and Bonnie Lander (avante-garde soprano).  Here are the dates:

28 JULY 8 pm with TILLERY (tpt+vocals)
9 AUGUST 9 pm with TILLERY
10 AUGUST 9 pm with SARAH MARIE HUGHES (alto sax)
15 AUGUST 9 pm  with BONNIE LANDER (avant-garde soprano).
OCTOBER 5,  8 pm with SARAH MARIE HUGHES (alto sax)

artists Andrea and Daniel Burkholder
"[The piece} begins and ends with a musical call in darkness. In between, there are set and improvised pieces of music, structured movement solos and duets, and moments of 'pure improvisation' where  absolutely nothing has been determined ahead of time .... at any point in time,  layers can emerge, take precedence, be background, or texture."
