Extinctions

a requiem for lost birds
composed for solo violin + coro

EXTINCTIONS premiered April 2026 at the Gonda Theatre, Georgetown University, Washington DC. Now welcoming inquiries about future performances, in multiple versions and arrangements. Please email with questions or requests.

As part of the premiere, field recordings of extinct birds' calls, songs, and drumming  were heard at moments during the performance. Some of these rare field recordings, generously provided by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, also were presented as part of an Audio Gallery installation in the lobby. The audio gallery also featured recordings of birds back from the brink of extinction, and  an interview with Jim Jacobi, recounting the extraordinary 1986 expedition that led to the last extant recording of the extinct Kauai Oo.

EXTINCTIONS is written In four movements, 30 minutes total performance time.  Program notes HERE.
